ARKANSAS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
    VALENTINE POP CONCERT
Five by Design
"Radio Days"

Presented by the Hot Springs Village Symphony Guild
February 2001

From the Program : "Imagine a voice coming from a crafted piece of furniture, an "electronic marvel".  During the 1940s, the radio console evoked  visions of make-believe ballrooms and big band remotes from Chicago, New York City and Hollywood.

It was the era when Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy, The Shadow, and Little Orphan Annie ruled the airwaves; hawking everything from shake-up mugs to pedometers and secret decoder rings ... all for one thin dime and a box top."

Five by Design is a St. Paul-Minneapolis based vocal quintet (Lori Carpenter-Niska, Catherine Farr, Kurt Niska, Michael Swedberg and Terrence Niska.

David Itkin introduced the afternoon's program by describing the 'treat' the audience was going to enjoy.  (The show had been in Little Rock at Robinson Auditorium the day before.)

Final Bows and a Standing Ovation!

Behind the Scenes ..

When a show comes to Woodlands, lights have to be gelled and focused - and that's where the lighting person with the show comes in.  He or she works with the technical staff at Woodlands to get the right colors in the right instruments - and to make sure the lights hit the stage where needed for the performance.
Sound is also a very specialized field.  The sound man (or woman) must plan microphones and speakers to enhance the sound of the performance for the particular house in which the performance takes place.  In some cases they use the Woodlands system, sometimes they bring in their own sound system and sometimes it's a combination of both.
